Drivers in Latvia need to stay informed about changes in road traffic rules and requirements from the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD), as they can affect driving habits, costs, and administrative obligations.
One major update involves the penalty points system. Certain violations, such as speeding or using a phone while driving, now carry more penalty points. Accumulating 16 points can lead to a driving ban for experienced drivers, and for new drivers, restrictions may occur even sooner.
From January 1, 2025, new rules apply to vehicles registered outside the EU or EEA. Cars registered in third countries must be declared through CSDD e-services before entering Latvia. Failure to declare may result in an administrative fine.
The Category B driving exam has also been updated. From June 2025, new drivers must demonstrate the ability to drive using a navigation system to better assess real-world driving skills.
Additionally, from November 1, 2025, drivers no longer need to physically surrender license plates when temporarily suspending a vehicle registration, making the process simpler and more convenient.
Rules for parking, stopping, and traffic congestion management are regularly updated. For example, vehicles obstructing public transport may be moved forcibly and fined.
At the EU level, new regulations are being introduced that will affect drivers in Latvia, including digital driver’s licenses, stricter rules for novice drivers, and a unified process for license revocation across EU countries.
Drivers should keep track of these changes to avoid fines, understand legal responsibilities, and drive safely. Regularly check your driver’s license status, CSDD e-services, and traffic rule updates.
